The Impact of Storytelling

Storytelling has tremendous power to allow for authentic and impactful human connections and learning opportunities. The RealStories™ Series will showcase the stories of the people who build our cities to foster a more open and inclusive business community.

Your story makes all the difference.

The Purpose

RealStories: Powered by the MāKin Foundation, was created to foster inspiration and awareness to the diverse experiences of leaders in our Commercial Real Estate and Development (CRED) industry and to spearhead change toward greater inclusion. The goal is to educate, impact and influence people to instigate the evolution of our industry. This is urgently needed to better serve the diverse population of the communities we are building.

In tandem, the MāKin Foundation Scholarship program is being developed to address the lack of diverse talent in our industry. The aim is to provide access to financial and community capital for diverse youth and students pursuing higher learning in Canadian universities, in addition to employment opportunities, mentorship and networking to finally broaden the talent pipeline. The goal is to expose, attract and support young minds to the CRED industry and demonstrate that success in the industry is possible for all regardless of background.

Why It Matters

Real estate is about community. It encompasses all aspects of human interaction and it’s the vehicle that connects people, work, place, play and space. The CRED industry is integral for human connectivity. It is a crucial driving force for the Canadian economy, accounting for over 13% of the GDP of Canada.

Although the CRED industry consists of land and buildings, it is an industry about people, for people by people. Simply stated, real estate is a place for life.

With the changing Canadian demographics directly impacting the future of workplaces, we must ensure the CRED industry has the best and brightest talent available, and that the industry will not be left behind.

Why You

RealStories: Powered by the MāKin Foundation, is focused on creating better access to education, networks and opportunities through promoting and advocating for diverse and underrepresented youth and professionals in the CRED industry.

We would love to hear the stories of your journey – including wins, challenges and perseverance – in an honest and real way. We believe that YOU have the ability to use your voice to inspire learning, reflection and action in others.
